What is SEO?

SEO means Search Engine Optimization.

SEO is the process of optimizing your website or blog for search engines (like Google, Bing, Yandex, Baidu etc.) in order to gets organic traffic from them. Getting traffic from search engines is the best source of traffic on the internet.

SEO is so powerful in the sense that people (especially those within your targeted location) can find your website without advertising to them.

With good website’s optimization, you can get some love from these search engines. These love includes real traffic, good impression on your business, getting you customers interested in what you sells or offers, boosting your sales and of course earn you a living online.

Some self-acclaimed SEO specialists may try to confuse you about what SEO really mean but here in this article, I’m not just going to tell you the meaning of SEO but I thoroughly will walk you through all the processes included in this best WordPress SEO tips for beginners or advanced learners.

WordPress SEO Tips: Getting Started

I believed you have your website ready before we start but if you haven’t and will like a tutorial on create one, here is an article for you on step-by-step guide to start a blog (or website) on WordPress.

Now let dive to the WordPress SEO’s realm.

Step-by-step Guide to Complete WordPress SEO Tips

1.       WordPress SEO Basic Settings

When you created your WordPress blog or website, I’m sure there are some dummy contents (including unwanted images and texts). You will have to replace these contents with yours in order to avoid plagiarism.

About the images, you may decide to leave them if they will be useful but they are not SEO friendly. I will tell you how to make those images and the new ones very SEO friendly; just continue reading.

This WordPress SEO tips doesn’t required any technical skill. All you have to do is simply by login into your WordPress dashboard with your username and password.

Under the Setting tab included in your WordPress dashboard, we are going to do the following:

  1. Unmark “Search Engine Visibility”
  2. Set a new SEO friendly permalink
  3. Setting the “WWW”
  4. Setting the “Site Title” and “Tagline”

Here we go.

  • Search Engine Visibility: This can be seen when you go to SETTINGS >>> READING. You will see a new page as seen in the picture below. Unmark that box before “Search Engine Visibility” and save your settings.
  • WordPress SEO Friendly Permalink: By default, WordPress came with ugly permalink which is not SEO friendly. This is what I mean:

>>> https://www.olgade.com/p=?123

>>> https://www.olgade.com/archive/123

>>> https://www.olgade.com/2016/08/12/my-permalink-sample

And so on, are so ugly in the sense that they are not SEO friendly which mean, Search Engines won’t be able to crawl, index and rank the pages easily. So to come up with SEO friendly permalink, you will have to change it to something like this:

>>>> https://www.olgade.com/my-permalink-sample

I believe you spot the difference(s) between the ugly and SEO friendly permalink? Now to do it in practical.

Head on to your SETTINGS >>> PERMALINK

You will see the Permalink Settings having 5 different permalink structure and 1 custom permalink structure.

Choose the 5th one which is “Post Name”, then save.

Note: If you just migrate from Google Blogging platform (Blogspot), don’t choose this permalink structure because it’s going to hurt your WordPress SEO due to broken links. Here is a guide on how to migrate from Blogspot to WordPress without affecting your SEO.

  • Setting the ‘WWW’ or ‘Non-WWW’: This is also important if you don’t want search engines to view your website’s contents as duplicate.

This is what I mean:

>>> https://www.olgade.com and https://olgade.com will be regarded as two different websites and this will cause conflict, I mean, search engines will be confused of which one to rank because they both have the same contents.

This is the solution:

Go to your SETTINGS >>> GENERAL

You will see where they asked you about the WordPress Address URL. Here, you are to write your website address URL as you want it to be access globally.

If you want your website to be access without “www”, then write your website in the box as https://yourwebsite.com but if you people to access your website with “www”, write your website address as https://www.yourwebsite.com.

NOTE: There is no disadvantage in choosing any of them but it’s bad if you don’t specify it here because of the reason I’ve mentioned earlier.

  • The Site Title & Tagline: This is also very important if you’re thinking of practising good WordPress SEO tips. All you have to do here is to keep things real and simple!

Go to SETTINGS >>> GENERAL

Right before the Website URL address settings, you will see two text-areas asking you about the site title and tagline.

You need to make the Site Title more than 9 characters and less than 20 characters while the tagline can be 5-6 words (be cautious of the length, it must be short).

Here is an example:

Site Title:  Olgade Tech Solutions

Tagline: Webdesign, SEO and Marketing Agency

So, those are the 4 basics in this WordPress SEO tips. Let go deeper in the SEO’s realm.

2.      Choose the best WordPress SEO Plugin

One of the amazing features of WordPress is the ability to use plugins. There are thousands of free plugins on WordPress that can help you get something done more quicker and even help you solve some technical issues (if you are not a programmer).

There are many plugins developed for SEO on WordPress such as “Yoast SEO”. “RankMath”, “All-in-One” and so on.

But in this WordPress SEO tips, I recommend the “Yoast SEO plugin”.

Go to your dashboard >> plugin. Search for ‘Yoast SEO’ and the plugin will comes out from the search result. Click on ‘Install’ and finally ‘activate’ it after installation.

After you’ve successfully installed and activated the SEO plugin, you need to starting setting it up with your information related to your website. In the future, I’m going to write about setting up the Yoast SEO plugin perfectly for WordPress websites.

3.      Submit Website to Google Search Console

Let say I want to be your friend, I will need to tell you about myself so that we can get to know each other. The same thing applied to search engines, you will need to tell them that your website or blog exists.

In this article, I will recommend starting with Google first. Because it is the largest and most used search engine in the world.

Google Search Console is the best webmaster tool on the internet and it’s totally FREE. To tell google about the existence of your website, we are going to use this wonderful tool.

Read this beginner’s Guide to Google Search Console to better understand the context of this point.

You will need to add your sitemap in the process of search console’s optimization but if you have installed the Yoast plugin, your sitemap will be automatically generated as >>> https://www.yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml.

Do you noticed the “Sitemap_index.xml”? It’s what you will just add to the sitemap area during the google search console processes. But if you are not using Yoast, you can simply use “Sitemap.xml” and submit it!

For other processes, please don’t forget to read this article.

4.      Enable (HTTPS) SSL Certificate on Your WordPress Website

To keep the internet and users more secured, it’s mandated that every website have SSL certificate installed in their website or blog but as things got more civilised where criminals are born daily to hack other people’s information, Google has made it part of their ranking factors.

Since Google made SSL certificate part of their ranking factor, we need to obey them and in fact, co-operate with them as they are trying to make the internet safe.

What do I mean about SSL certificate?

In simple term, it’s when you have your website in “HTTPS” instead of “http”.

HTTP means Hypher Text Transfer Protocol – which is not safe and against google ranking factors.

But HTTPS means Hypher Text Transfer Protocol Secured – which is safe and meet the google ranking factors’ measures.

To know more about the difference between the two, and the benefit of using HTTPS, kindly read this article for better understanding.

After getting the SSL certificate installed through your webhosting provider or SSL certificate provider, you can install “Force Http” plugin to make all HTTP request on your website automatically redirect to HTTPS.

Here is what I mean:

  • Image Compression: Make sure your image’s size is low. Avoid using images with 100kb, 200kb etc. I found some website owners using image up to 1mb which is too bad for their website.

In this WordPress SEO Tips, I recommend using online websites like TinyPng.com to compress your image’s size. This website will compress the image in the sense that the quality will still remain.

Since you’re using WordPress, you can install “ReSmush It” plugin to help you without going through any manual process.

Compressing your images will also make your website load faster.

  • Use ALT Title: This is important for SEO because google and other search engines have the power to rank your website by crawling your images (if well optimized).

To optimize your WordPress Image for SEO, while uploading the image to your website, simply put the page keywords in the ALT title text area. Consider the image below:

6.      Write & Publish SEO Friendly Posts

It’s going to be a sin if I don’t mention SEO friendly post because this is a very wide topic on its own.

Your posts or let me say contents plays a very wide role in your Onpage SEO. Because it’s going to position your keywords, business and ideas to search engines while telling them (search engines) that you have better resources to share with people.

Most of my clients don’t know about important of unique and SEO friendly blog posts and I know if you own an ecommerce or portfolio website, you may be thinking the same thing that, all you have to do is to sell your stuffs and no more.

But according to this WordPress SEO tips that you are reading presently, it’s a must to have well written, unique and SEO friendly posts on your website.

Well, I have writing an article where I discuss more practical about how you can write a kick-ass content with this 20 Tips to SEO friendly blog post.

7.      Interlinking for WordPress SEO

In other to convince the search engines that you know what you are doing and what you writes and publishes in your WordPress website or blog really tally with each other, you need to interlink.

What I mean by interlinking is when you are telling your readers to click on CTA words in order to read from another page in your website.

To clearly understand this, you would have noticed that at a junction, I will tell you to click on few words also refers to as “Anchor Text” in order to learn more about a particular topic. For instance, if you click here, you will be directed to another article I’ve written few months ago.

Thousands of website owners or bloggers doesn’t know the importance of interlinking their blog posts together and it is part of the reason they are not ranking higher than their present positions in SERPs.

But because you are reading this WordPress SEO tips carefully written by me from my years of experience as an SEO manager, I will tell you how to interlink the right ways.

This particular blog post is talking about “WordPress SEO” right? Let say I have an article about “How to make money on WordPress”, I can easily refer my readers to reading it by clicking on a link right in this article – That’s why it’s called interlinking.

But how can you interlink in WordPress for SEO sake?

To interlink in WordPress is very easy.

If you’re on “Visual mode”, simply highlight on the words you want the readers to click on and press “Ctrl + K” or better still, at the top of your WordPress text area, you will find an icon like chain, click on it and search for the articles you want to link to.

Interlinking will help you pass on juice to other pages within your website and thereby making it stronger to rank higher on search engines.

Here is a tip:

  • Make sure the link open in a new tab. This will help you decrease bounce rate and google will think you website is very informational because of the longer time spent in your website.
  • Don’t link to another page using the keywords you are focusing for. For example, if I’m focusing on “WordPress Tips” in this article, I won’t link to any page using WordPress Tips as part of the anchor text.
  • Make sure you only link to pages relevant to the current page you are interlinking from.

8.      No-follow Outbound Link for WordPress SEO

Outbound links are the opposite of interlinking. It is otherwise known as External links and according to Yoast’s WordPress SEO tips, we need to give external links to valuable and resource websites or blogs in other to rank higher on search engines.

But the sad news is that, giving “Do-follow” links to other website will make decrease your website’s strength to rank faster on search engines because you’re passing that juicy link (power) to other websites.

ALSO READ:  HTTP Vs HTTPS: Benefits of SSL Certificate on Your Website or Blog

I mean the juice you supposed to be managing and even try to increase, sharing out makes no sense.

This doesn’t stop you from giving out links. And that will make me talk about the two types of links which are:

  • Do-follow Links: This means that search engines should follow the link to its source and share your website SEO juice with them.

If you allow “do-follow” for interlinking, it’s good. Because you are passing your juicy links to other pages which will make search engines to rank you more.

  • No-follow Links: This means that search engines should not follow the link to its source and you’re not allowing your SEO strength to be shared with other pages.

If you want to give links or recommend a website to your readers, make sure it’s in No-follow except the person pay you some money for do-follow links

You may be asking how to give do-follow or No-follow link, here is how:

To give do-follow or no-follow link, change from Visual to Text simply add rel=”dofollow” at the back of the website URL in HTML mode as:

<a href=”https://www.gbolamedia.com” rel=”dofollow”>Website Here</a> and replace the “dofollow” to “nofollow” for no-follow links.

I know this may be a little bit technical but there are free WordPress plugins that can help without passing through these stress. Simply go to your dashboard >>> plugin >>>> search for “Nofollow” and different plugins will come out. Choose your desired one.

After installing and activating, you can now make any link as “no-follow” if you highlight the words (anchor text) and click on that chain icon, edit it and you will see a place that ask you to choose maybe to “no-follow” the link or not.

If you make good use of do-follow and no-follow link wisely, you’ve obeyed two out of different WordPress SEO tips by Yoast. And at the same time, you are working hard to increase your online visibility.

9.      Backlinking for WordPress SEO

I don’t need to explain to explain this word-by-word again. I have it in three different articles here, here and here.

And you can also get the idea from the explanation on outbound links above.

Backlinking is the process of getting links from other website to your own.

But you need to be careful of links you build to your website. Remember I said outbound link is link sharing something juicy to another website. But if your website’s juice is powerful than the website you’re getting links from, then it’s literary not useful to you.

What I mean is this, your website that want to link your website must be ranking high on search engines. It will be great if the website are even powerful than yours.

To make this clearer, Moz has made it possible to measure websites’ authority which you must consider when before trying to links to your website.

This website DA & PA checker tool will help you out.

Just click on the hyperlink above or here and you will be directed to a page where you can calculate the website authority.

Remember, the overall score is 100. So, the more Domain authority (DA) score you get or target, the more it will help your WordPress SEO strategies.

This WordPress SEO tips recommend targeting websites or blogs having more than 20 as domain authority.

Note that you are going to pay for these backlinks especially the “Do-follow” links.
